This is a common complaint.
“The school changed my child’s name on all records without informing us.”
This action is clearly psychologically harmful because it drives an ideological wedge between school and parents.
School are supposed to act ‘in loco parentis’ and with a ‘duty of care’. Riding roughshod over parents’ right to parent as they see fit, while at the same time validating and foreclosing a harmful notion of a child’s self, contradicts the standards of behaviour parents reasonably expect from schools.
Encouraging a child to have secrets that cannot be shared with parents is contrary to good safeguarding. It can also create the conditions for other types of grooming to occur.
